In today’s world, social media is all around us. It allows us to connect with close friends when we’re far away, meet new personal and professional connections, and re-connect with people we may have lost touch with. It can also, however, be a huge distraction.
So what do you do at your wedding? Some couples opt for a “cell-phone free” ceremony, so guests can be in the moment and the bride and groom don’t feel like they are being ignored in favor of Facebook. Other couples embrace social media, asking their guests to put photos on Instagram, or hashtag the event on Twitter.
For your own wedding, do whatever feels right. If you’re the type of person who is annoyed when your friends are constantly buried in their cell phones, consider posting cute “no phone zone” signs, or even having collection baskets so your guests won’t be stricken by temptation. If, on the other hand, you want your wedding to be broadcast on social media so you can review the happy notes afterwards, give your guests Twitter and Facebook hashtags to use, or set up an Instagram account that they can post to.
